It
is the seat of the Brasov County and it is situated at the foot
of Tampa Massif. Among its historical monuments there are:

Brasov
Fortress (1395), surrounded until the 17th century by
defence walls 3 km long and up to 12 m high, their thickness
varying from 1,70m to 2,20m. Nowadays, one can still see:
the wall on the north side, having tow inner walls; the Blacksmith's
Bastion; Ecaterina's Gate (1559); the inner wall on the south
side, with the Weaver's Bastion (which is unique in Romania),
the Rope-makers' Bastion, the Cloth-makers' Bastion and three
towers. As for defence works, one can still see: the White
Tower and the Black Tower (the 15th century), the Citadel
(the 16th and the 17th centuries), the present picturesque
tourist complex "Cetatea/The Fortress";
- The
Old Town Hall Square - documentary certified in 1520. It
was the center and the market place of the old Brasov for centuries.
In the square there was a place of punishment for criminals
called "The Pillar of Infamy";
- The
Old Town Hall (1420)
- The
Schei District - the oldest settlement displaying the features
of the Romanian urban architecture in the territory of Brasov.
It is an architectural reservation.
- The
Merchants' House - the present Cerbul Carpatin/Carpathian
Stag Restaurant (1545). It is the former commercial center of
merchants and craftsmen.
- The
Black Church (1385-1477). It has been called the Black church
since the 1689 fire. It is one of the biggest organs and a collection
of old Oriental carpets.
- St.
Nicholas' Church (1495) built at the request of Neagoe Basarab,
the ruler of Wallachia. It still preserves a priceless mural
painting from the 18th century as well as old Romanian art objects.
- St.
Bartholomew's Church (1223), the oldest architectural monument
in Brasov, the Roman style with Gothic elements.
