National Museum & Palace |
| Description:
The Brukenthal Palace was built by Samuel Brukenthal, governor
of Transylvania, in baroque style between 1777 and 1787. He
gathered here a vast collection of paintings, antiques, coins,
and rare books. Palace hosts the Brukenthal Museum which includes
the Art Gallery and the Exhibition of Ethnography and Folk
Arts. The Art Gallery was open for the public in 1817, seven
years earlier than the National Gallery in London, with 1090
paintings from the collection of the Samuel Brukenthal, governor
of Transylvania. Today the Art Gallery, which is one of the
richest in Europe, contains a number of 450 paintings belongings
to the Flemish and Dutch schools, about 500 paintings representing
the German and Austrian schools, and 200 Italian paintings
in different styles starting with Renaissance. The Romanian
collection contains 1500 pieces, mostly signed by academic
painters whose names are part of the national heritage. The
entire collection reaches the imposing number of 10,000 pieces.
Brukenthal's own collection, displayed on the second floor,
comprises European paintings from the 15C - 18C. It is particularly
strong in Dutch and Flemish paintings and scenes by Caravaggisti.
Among many beguiling canvases is 'Mary Magdalena reading her
Bible in Prison' by Caracciolo (1578 - 1635). The Ethnography
and Folk Collection is structured in several sectors: - The
Pottery Room - Textile and Fabrics - Folks Costumes, with
two rustic interiors - Wood processing - Painting on Glass

of Folk Technology |
| Description:
Built between 1963 and 1969 and opened for the public in 1967,
the Museum offers an elaborate demonstration of pre-industrial
folk technology and development in Romania. Located in the
middle of a magnificent landscape, with cool forests and sunny
glades surrounding a 6 ha lake it is the most attractive open-air
museum in the country. Spread on a huge area of 96 hectares
crossed by 10 km of trails. Divided in 6 sections includes
340 buildings, including watermills and windmills, gigantic
wine, fruit and oil presses, fueling mills, forges and 16000
inventory values, structures representing architectural styles
from many parts of Romania. There is a wonderful collection
of wooden farmhouses, a 'cherhana' (a traditional collecting
and storage point for fish) and sheep folds, as well as a
wooden church. It has a café and a traditional han than can
be hired for parties. Trolleybuses T1 and T4 both runs to
Hanul Dumbrava or take buses 17 (to Rasinari) or 15 (to Paltinis).
Trams run past the museum from Calea Dumbravii and from Rasinari.
The museum has its own minibus, which will ferry you from
the Large Square. Guided tours are available. You can also
visit the museum by horse-drawn cart. Traditionally entertainment
held here annually are: - Romanian Craftsmen Fair (around
mid August) -Traditional Artistic Handcrafts competition organized
since 1992 in June.

| Description:
Located in a historic building used to be the Old Town Hall
for 450 years, the Museum of History owns a rich collection
counting 250,000 exhibits from various fields: medieval, numismatics,
sigillography, medals, antique and medieval lapidariums. It
includes as well a medieval weapon exhibition. The building
was built in 16th century in Renaissance and Gothic style.
There is a gallery in the yard, which leads to the tower.

| Museum
of Natural History |
| Description:
One of the oldest and richest of its kind in Romania, the
Museum contains over 1 million units that represent almost
one third of the total collection of natural science in the
country. Founded by Transylvanian Asociation of Natural Science
Naturale (Siebenbürgischer Verein für Naturwiessenschaften)
in 1849, hosted in actual building since 1895. The museum
owns also an astronomic observation center. Open daily between
9 to 5. Monday closed.

Museum of Pharmacy History |
| Description:
Located in an historical building dated 1569 where one of
the oldest pharmacy in country was. Samuel Hohnemann (1755-1843)
invented homeopathy and developed his treatment in the basement
of this house. Some of his phials and plans are on display.
The exhibition is organized on the structure of a classical
pharmacy that includes two laboratories, one homeopathic sector
and a documentation sector. It contains over 6000 ancient
medical instruments and dispensing tools from the time when
Sibiu had more chemists' than anywhere else in Transylvania.
At the front, a reconstructed shop is decked out with wooden
counters and stacks of glass jars creating the atmosphere
of an 18C apotek. The furniture is Viennese. Very important
is the collection of pharmaceutics jars made of wood with
painted marks.

| The
Hunting Weapons and Trophies Exhibition |
| Description:
The exhibition reflects the evolution in time of weapons and
hunting tools. Important is as well the collection of trophies
displayed. Opened for the public in 1966 in Spiess House,
the ehibition contains over 1,500 units. Open daily between
9 to 5. Monday closed.

Museum of Transylvanian Civilization "Astra" |
| Description:
Open Daily: 10 - 18 (except Monday). Founded in 1993, the
museum is representing the Transylvanian culture and civilization
of the Romanian people in an interethnical and interdisciplinar
vision. It owns a valuable objectual patrimony: collections
of national costumes, textiles and embroideries, pottery,
cult objects, wooden, bone and iron objects in more than 30.000
items.

Saxons Ethnography Museum "Emil Sigerus" |
| Description:
Established in 1997, its patrimony contains almost 7000 objects;
the "Emil Sigerus" collection, transferred from the patrimony
of the ex-"Carpathian Museum" (founded in 1885) and the valuable
collections belonging to Julius Bielz, Wilhelm and Gisela
Rosa Richter, Carl Engber and Erwin Ulbrich. A first permanent
exhibition is entitled "Transylvanian Civilization. The tile
trade". Through this, a huge patrimonial nucleus of an extraordinary
documentary value will be put into account.

The Steam Locomotive Museum |
| Description:
The official "Steam Locomotive Museum" was inaugurated on
23 August, 1994 - the occasion of the centenary of the Sibiu
- Cisnadie line. It now comprises 23 standard gauge locomotives,
10 narrow gauge locomotives, 3 snow ploughs and 2 steam cranes.
The locomotive shown here were built between 1885 and 1959
in Romania and other countries, like Germany (Henschel, Borsig,
Schwartzkopff) and USA (Baldwin). Seven of these locomotives
are active and are used on a variety of special trains for
enthusiasts and other groups. The Museum is located opposite
the main railway station in Sibiu, comprising the former roundhouse
and turntable across the railways lines.
